Synopsis
Emilia Pérez tells the story of four extraordinary women in Mexico, each of them searching for their own happiness. Cartel leader Emilia enlists the help of Rita, an underappreciated lawyer, to fake her death so she can finally live authentically as the real her. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two-year preparation for this demanding role in Jacques Audiard’s film and about the two extremes of her personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. On the French title card, the name of the Indian city is misspelled as ‘Dehli’.

The script explores the journeys of the characters, and his imaginative style really adds a lot to the setting
Audiard is a director who always surprises me with his work because he creates stories that are interesting and very different from other films I have seen. The concept of the musical about Mexico, drug dealers, gender identity and corruption is very strange and a bit chaotic, but thanks to Audiard’s direction and approach Audiard’s direction works, the script and approach are well thought out. Many of the characters, while certainly not all likeable people, still motivate you to follow these characters and see who they are and what are their goals. With good cinematography, production and soundtrack, all the performances are excellent, especially Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón as they both gave outstanding performances.
While some of the melodies and songs didn’t really work, overall it offered itself
As a musical, the lyrics are quite good as there are some really memorable songs that I still remember always in my head. I appreciate a film that uses transgender identity themes and depth quite well combined with musical moments! The script is good, but I have to admit that I wasn’t convinced by every aspect, as some of it seemed disjointed and a bit too melodramatic. Overall, this isn’t my favorite Jacques Audiard film, but one thing is for sure, there is something unique and memorable about it.
