Greetings from the darkness again
Ed: That marks the end of our game. Well, Cheryl, it’s time to make a decision! Mentioned in the episode “CTV News Six Toronto: September 8, 2023” (2023). I Don’t Mind by Morris Bailey Jr. & Lee Phillips Presented by Jackie Lavant & Fashion by Jamie Record Co. As a single woman, having the looks of a model is a welcome compliment. As a runaway living on the streets, having a young man point at you is a welcome development.
What do all of these situations have in common?
As a single woman, moving house and helping an attractive young man move furniture is a welcome event. As a struggling actor, breaking into a hit series is a welcome job. They depict vulnerable women confronting Rodney Alcala, the notorious serial rapist and murderer. This is the first feature film from the extremely talented Anna Kendrick. Director Kendrick also stars as Cheryl Bradshaw, a troubled actress who we first meet during her endless casting rounds in which she is barred from being cast because of his looks. It’s one of a series of misogynistic scenarios played out in this film, written by Ian MacDonald, and based on the true story of evil Rodney Alcala (played by Daniel Zovatto). The film is mostly set in the late 1970s, though it jumps back and forth a bit.
This episode alone proves Ms
We first see Alcala in 1977 Wyoming, charming a woman by using his camera and photography skills to comfort her and lure her into his car. There’s very little onscreen violence, but the aftermath is there – leaving no doubt that Alcala is a monster. In addition to the murders, Rodney Alcala made the title famous through his 1978 appearance on the highly popular TV show “The Dating Game.” Show at that time (only we don’t get to hear the iconic theme song and there’s no kiss at the end). By pure coincidence, Cheryl Bradshaw was the bachelor questioning the three bachelors that day. Ed Burke (not Jim Lange, played by Tony Hale) hosts the show, contributing to the misogyny of the time, while the hair and makeup ladies quietly cheer Cheryl on as she rephrases the second half’s questions, exposing her. frustrated at playing the object of desire for three men. The film’s best scene, in which Cheryl and Alcala walk across a dimly lit parking lot after a too-awkward post-show drink, is devoid of any creepy or horrifying moments.
Kendrick’s skill as a filmmaker – the tension is almost unbearable
Rather than straightforward retellings of 1970s psychopath stories, the film adds layers to remind us of what women experienced during that time—from subtle lack of dignity to outright mistreatment and constant concern for their safety. Even Cheryl’s interactions with her neighbor (Pete Holmes) illustrate the challenges encountered in ordinary settings. The San Gabriel segment with the fugitive (Autumn Best) from 1979 is both true and terrifying, and further evidence of how much leeway an educated white man like Alcala could have (he had already been questioned by police in 1977).
